Piedmont Players is bringing one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals to the Meroney Theater this summer with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, a timeless story of romance, community, and the pioneering spirit that helped shape America.
Set in the Oklahoma Territory at the turn of the 20th century, *Oklahoma! *follows the budding romance between cowboy Curly McLain and farm girl Laurey Williams as the community prepares for statehood. Filled with memorable characters, sweeping choreography, and classic songs including “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and the iconic title number, the musical has remained a favorite of audiences for generations.
Directing the production is Tod Kubo, who has directed numerous productions for Piedmont Players over the years, including last season’s North Carolina community theatre premiere of The Bodyguard. He believes the show’s lasting appeal comes from the themes at its heart.
“Oklahoma resonates today due to its exploration of universal themes like love, loss, community, and identity,” said Kubo. “The story reflects the American spirit, capturing both optimism and challenges, while celebrating powerful women who made our country what it is today.”
Featuring a talented local cast, Oklahoma! offers audiences the chance to experience one of musical theatre’s most celebrated productions live on stage.
“Our cast brings fresh energy and unique interpretations, enhancing the chemistry and depth between the characters,” Kubo said. “Their passion creates a vibrant, dynamic experience that honors the original Rodgers and Hammerstein masterpiece.”
Whether you’re revisiting a longtime favorite or seeing it for the first time, the production promises an evening filled with memorable music, heartfelt storytelling, and the energy that only live theatre can provide.
Kubo said he hopes audiences leave the theatre with more than just memories of the music.
“I hope audiences leave feeling uplifted while the sense of community portrayed encourages viewers to feel more connected to each other.”
He added that one of the production’s highlights has been bringing one of the show’s most iconic sequences to life.
“It’s an honor to choreograph the full dream ballet and further immerse the audience, making this production a true celebration of life and the American spirit.”
Oklahoma! runs July 10–26 at the Meroney Theater, 213 S. Main St., Salisbury. Tickets are available at PiedmontPlayers.com or by calling the Piedmont Players Box Office, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 704-633-5471.
